Keep an eye out here for multiple versions for some years. Several seasons saw commissioner changes and commemorative World Series logo design changes. We’re displaying anything that was intended for game use below, even if canceled. In 2001, for example, a ceremonial first pitch baseball was added to the Fall Classic, and the original 2001 game ball was scrapped in favor of a more patriotic banner logo after many thousands of baseballs had already been printed. MLB World Series Balls: Reprints & Game-Used Examples
We’re also including this secondary gallery for Rawlings World Series reproduction/reprint baseballs for comparison’s sake. That’s primarily for late 1970s to early 1990s baseballs where there are key differences, such as missing manufacturer’s country of origin stamps (Haiti, Costa Rica) or logo size/color issues. But beware, there are tiny variations to printing plate and trademark symbols that are easy to miss even by knowledgable collectors. We’ve also added a few game-used examples for fun. Most reprints began in 2009, but there are early reprint runs from the 1990s, and ‘continued print runs’ in the 1980s that many collectors would consider to be reprints. The league permitted (or possibly required) Rawlings to continue printing each season’s World Series balls for a few years after the event. So even a seemingly original 1978 or 1986 ball (for example) with appropriate markings and country of origin stamp could in fact be a reprint. We can often identify a minor variation in the stamping of a later print run ball that sets it apart from the true on-field version and first print run. But that’s not always going to be possible for ever baseball.
Our photos aim to aid collectors in the identification of originals, but they’re not always conclusive for each variation. At least not yet. Also worth noting: older reprints should be treasured just like the originals—they’re becoming just as rare. Newer, modern reprints? Well their worth is up to collectors. Personally, I avoid them and only chase the authentic originals, except for the cataloging purposes of this Museum of Baseballs.
